  • Back in 2012, there was a revolution in smartphone technology that came in the form of the iPhone 5. It was still very small in a market when manufacturers were releasing 5-inch devices, but its performance and attributes kept it through the competition and even beat most of the flagships released that year.

Simply looking at the device at a glance and holding it in your hand will show you premium quality in design and build. But you only get the true sense of the iPhone 5’s strength when you power on the device and start swiping. Small in size and extremely light, this device is capable of handling anything thrown at it, despite its release date.

In a market where devices are enormous in size and have multiple processor cores, Apple exemplify simplicity. They have refined their operating system to work efficiently even with less processing power so that it can keep up with the user’s demands.

Simply put, this is the device for the individual who prefers simplicity over complexity, yet still getting every bit of use from their smartphone. It’s a device you can feel comfortable operating in one hand all the while feeling every bit as premium as a 5-inch device.

There is still a lot going for the iPhone 5, and only a look at the device’s specs could show you that.

International models are brand new, genuine products. You may notice very minor differences when compared with local models, however, all international models are supplied with an Australia/New Zealand compliant generic charger and are perfectly suited for use in Australia or New Zealand

By cutting out all the middlemen, we’re often able to sell the world’s biggest and best brands (like AppleSamsung and Huawei) for significantly cheaper than local retailers.

Being an online-only retailer allows us to cut unnecessary costs and keep costs down. We’re able to bypass agents, importers, wholesalers and distributors that are usually part of the retail process. By cutting out these expensive middlemen, we can pass the savings onto you, where they belong! It also means that we avoid the many costs involved with running bricks and mortar stores, resulting in even more savings for you.

In most cases, the delivery will be within 2 working days. However, for some models, it can take between 10-14 days. Please always feel free to check with the support team on delivery times if you are unsure.

Of course! All of Callcom’s direct import products are backed by a 1 Year Standard Care Warranty for your total shopping confidence and peace of mind.

  • Design

On a first glance, there's very little to tell this smartphone from the iPhone 5. However, the iPhone 5s remains a beautifully made and desirable smartphone and it's an improvement on its predecessor in practically every way. Apple doesn't skimp on premium materials here, as the metal body and Gorilla Glass covered screen still look and feel fantastic.

    iPhone 5S Volume Buttons

It's not just the materials, but the attention to detail that catches the eye. Its precision-cut aluminium rear sits absolutely flush with glass panels that sit at the top and bottom. The smartphone's neat bevelled edges are perfectly formed and the 7.3mm thick phone feels incredibly comfortable in the hand. Weighing just 112g, which still feels almost impossibly light when you pick up the smartphone for the first time, the iPhone 5S is incredible to look at and hold.

The iPhone 5S is hard-wearing, too, thanks to its tough aluminium body. We've been carrying our one around since launch and, aside from the odd minor scratch (mostly around the bezel), it looks as good as the day it was taken out of its box. We keep the phone in a sleeve case to protect the sides and screen, but the quality is still impressive to behold.

    iPhone 5S Rear

If you're coming from a large-screen Android phone, the iPhone 5S does look a little small, but for all practical purposes it's still a great size. It fits easily in one hand, letting you use it with just your thumb, while you can put it comfortably in any pocket.

iPhone 5S vs Samsung Galaxy S5

The white model is the same as the iPhone 5, but the iPhone 5S is also available in space grey, which replaces the 'black' model of last year and has a purer grey case than the iPhone 5's blue-grey model. It's the gold edition that's really different, though. Pictures don't do it justice, as it tends to look quite garish, but in the flesh the champagne gold finish is altogether more subtle and classier.

Gold model aside, the biggest issue of the iPhone 5S's looks is that to the untrained eye it doesn't look as though you've bought a new phone, although Apple has at least eased the burden by taking the iPhone 5 off sale, replacing it with the plastic iPhone 5C instead.

    iPhone 5S TouchID

There is one big clue that the phone you've got is the iPhone 5S: the metal-rimmed home button, which no longer has the familiar-looking square icon in it. As you're no doubt aware, this is the brand-new fingerprint reader, Touch ID. With Touch ID, rather than having to tap in a PIN to unlock your phone, you can simply hold your finger over the sensor. If that sounds like a gimmick, it's not: it's actually a brilliant time saver and something that helps enforce security.

Although Apple still maintained an 8MP camera similar to its predecessor, they introduced new technology that made the new camera way better. By increasing the pixel size to 1.4 microns and the aperture to f/2.4, the camera could take better pictures in low light because more light could be detected. To date, this camera can still be used for general pictures, but you wouldn’t want to use them commercially due to the low pixel count.

Apple got everything right with the design, the 4-inch display comfortable fits into an aluminium body. At the back, there is glass at the top and bottom to allow for network signals, but these are usually the first to crack upon impact. Nevertheless, the iPhone 5 feels premium in the hand and certainly one device you wouldn’t mind holding for a long time. At the bottom, Apple did away with the thick 12-pin connector and replaced it with a smaller, reversible connector.

Running everything is the Apple A6 chip which is capable of handling ‘heavy’ apps. However, it’s still a 32-bit processor yet more and more apps are being tailored to the new 64-bit processors. This means you may have a little trouble running the latest apps and games, but not so much.

You can get this device in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants; choose wisely here, because there is no expandable storage and what you get is all you will ever have. The RAM is also quite small at 1GB, but iOS has never needed much RAM and the device still runs very smoothly.

The battery on the iPhone 5 is quite small, 1,440mAh, but for a 4-inch device it’s still enough. However, iPhones don’t have the best record with battery life, and this one isn’t any different, you would be lucky to get through the day without recharging, but guaranteed you would have to charge the device every single day.
