AMOLED VS. LCD SCREENS September 09 2015, 0 Comments

The screen is obviously the most important part of any smartphone, with almost all of them having a touchscreen, the Blackberry is an exception. Don’t get confused by all the abbreviations, though: AMOLED, LCD, IPS, etc. There are only two basic types, AMOLED and LCD, and the others are only modifications from these two types.

So, which one is best? Well, it depends on what you value most, let’s look at some things you might want to consider:

Outdoor visibility

AMOLED has always been weaker outside in direct sunlight. Even though Samsung have made improvements to make the display better outside, an LCD screen still has better outdoor visibility. If you spend a lot of time outside, this might be a deal breaker, but if you only use your device minimally when out of the house, it’s not a big deal.

Image saturation

AMOLED screens are notorious for having saturated images, perhaps even over-saturated. Looking at a Samsung and iPhone side-by-side, you will see the Samsung displaying deeper and richer colours compared to the iPhone. On this, it really is a matter of preference, because some like the deep colours and others say it’s ‘unnatural’ and not real.

Battery ‘consumption’

An LCD screen has to power all the liquid crystals constantly, even where it needs to produce a black colour. AMOLEDs, on the other hand, can selectively light up different pixels when needed, turning them off to display a black colour, giving off darker blacks. For this reason, LCD screens use up more battery when the screen is on, and using a black wallpaper on your Samsung will significantly save you battery.

Parting shot

Both screens can display images and videos clearly, the choice will depend on how you use your device most of the time. Another downside I found with LCD, although not important, is that sometimes you can see the pixels when you hold the device in certain positions, something you won’t see with AMOLED. Clearly, I’m an AMOLED fan, but you don’t have to be one yourself, make your own choice.
