Types of screen protectors May 04 2016, 0 Comments
There are only 2 types of screen protectors: plastic and glass, all other variations are developed from these two materials. Plastic screen protectors are made from polyurethane while glass protectors use strengthened glass to make it more resistant. All you now need is to compare these two technologies and determine which one is best for you.
Which is better between the two?
As you might have already guessed, plastic screen protectors are not as strong as glass protectors. Plastic protectors are just a thin strip of transparent plastic material laid on top of your screen. Their purpose is to receive the scratches on behalf of your screen, and are not meant to stay long before they have to be replaced. Glass protectors, on the other hand, are a bit thicker and involve strengthened glass. Glass is heated and treated with chemicals to improve its molecular structure so that it’s more resistant to pressure. A good glass protector can be used for years depending on how much pressure it is exposed to according to your activity.
One of the main reasons plastic protectors are still around despite their shortcomings is because of their price. A common plastic protector would cost less than $5 and even the best won’t go far beyond that price tag. In fact, they are so common and affordable you will usually find one bundled with your device during checkout. Glass protectors, however, can cost anywhere between $10 - $75 depending on the company that produced it. Like I said, glass is only more resistant than plastic but not completely immune to scratches, so now you can see why replacing a glass protector can be a bit of a pain.
However, with new technology comes efficiency. Anyone who has ever had to install a plastic protector will tell you it can be quite stressful, but not with glass protectors. Glass protectors are stiffer and do not create bubbles when placed on the screen; installing one is therefore almost instant.
Which one is right for you?
If you’re usually careful and don’t often scratch or drop your device, then a glass protector would be your best option. It would probably serve you for months before having to replace it which would save you from those incidents when you would have scratched your screen. If, on the other hand, scratches are a way of life for you, a plastic protector would be cheaper to replace due to price compared to a glass one.
